Alison Krauss Biography
Born July 23, 1971, Alison Krauss grew up in Champaign, Ill., where her parents encouraged her and her brother, Viktor, to play instruments at an early age. Soon after taking up the violin, Krauss discovered fiddle contests and bluegrass festivals. She earned her initial acclaim as an instrumentalist, but soon it was her voice that captivated everyone's attention.
Rounder Records signed Krauss as an artist when she was 14. As her career has progressed, she has developed her skills as a producer, arranger and finder of great songs. In addition to producing her own recordings with Union Station, Krauss has produced three albums for the Cox Family and two for Nickel Creek. She also produced Reba McEntire's 2001 single, "Sweet Music Man."
After launching her recording career with the 1987 album, Too Late to Cry, Krauss introduced her band, Union Station, on the 1989 release Two Highways. She joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1993 at the age of 21.
The band made bluegrass sales history with the 1995 release of Now That I've Found You: A Collection which achieved double platinum status. That same year, Krauss won an astounding four CMA Awards, including female vocalist, horizon award, single ("When You Say Nothing at All") and vocal event ("Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart," with Shenandoah).
Her next three projects, including 1999's pop-flavored solo album Forget About It, were each certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies. The band's 2002 concert album, Live, was certified double platinum.
Krauss remains in demand for studio work. She has sung and played on recordings by such artists as Bad Company, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, John Michael Montgomery, Michael McDonald, Michael Johnson, Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Rhonda Vincent, Dar Williams, Brad Paisley, the Chieftains, Kris Kristofferson, Kenny Rogers, Ralph Stanley, Shenandoah and Phish.
In addition to collaborating with high profile artists for special projects, Krauss has been in high demand for film soundtracks. Most notable is her involvement in the soundtrack for the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou? -- a project that also gained additional attention for Union Station member Dan Tyminski. They also appeared in the companion concert film, Down From the Mountain. Krauss has also contributed music to other film and TV shows, including soundtracks for Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Where the Red Fern Grows, Mona Lisa Smile, Crossing Jordan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
Krauss collaborated with rock musician Sting for "You Will Be My Ain True Love," one of two tracks she recorded for the 2003 film, Cold Mountain. The song garnered an Oscar nomination. She also teamed with James Taylor to record "How's the World Treating You" for the 2003 tribute album, Livin', Lovin', Losin': Songs of the Louvin Brothers. The pairing won a Grammy and Live won two.
In 2004, Alison Krauss & Union Station delivered the exquisite album, Lonely Runs Both Ways. The project brought in three more Grammys, bringing her total to 20 -- the most of any woman in history. She also picked up two more CMA Awards in 2004 for "Whiskey Lullaby," her duet with Brad Paisley. In addition, Jackson enlisted her to produce his 2006 album, Like Red on a Rose.
Tyminski, who plays guitar and sings in Union Station, remains one of the most dynamic and talented performers on the bluegrass scene. Although he had already earned a strong following, Tyminski found himself in the media spotlight after providing the singing voice for George Clooney in O Brother, Where Art Thou? His performance of "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" won single of the year honors at the 2001 CMA Awards and a 2001 Grammy for country collaboration of the year. Including his tally with Union Station, he has won 10 Grammys.
Before becoming a member of Union Station in 1994, Tyminski played mandolin and sang in the Lonesome River Band. Tyminski's love and feel for traditional bluegrass didn't come from growing up in the southern Appalachians but rather in Vermont. He credits his brother Stan with getting him hooked on the guitar and mandolin at the age of 6. While Stan was in the Navy and home on leave, he left his mandolin with his younger brother. Tyminski attributes his love for traditional bluegrass to such musicians and singers as Del McCoury, Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Larry Sparks and Jimmy Martin. In 2003, Rounder reissued Tyminski's solo album, Carry Me Across the Mountain, first released in 2000 by Doobie Shea Records.
Barry Bales, bass player and harmony vocalist for Union Station, grew up in Kingsport, Tenn. His first memories of music are listening to the records of Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Bob Wills, Buck Owens and Hank Thompson from his father's extensive collection. Inspired by his father's guitar playing and singing, Bales started experimenting with different instruments at the age of 10. At 16, he found the bass. Bales attended East Tennessee State University for three-and-a-half years. During that time, he played in the band Dusty Miller, which also included former Union Station members Adam Steffey and Tim Stafford. It was during that time the three met Krauss, who soon after asked them to join Union Station.
Ron Block has been playing the banjo and guitar, as well as writing songs and singing, with Union Station since October 1991. Before joining Union Station, he was a member of the Lynn Morris Band and Weary Hearts. Block grew up surrounded by music in his father's music store in Lawndale, Calif. A musician himself, Block's father played bass in a rhythm and blues band. Block says his earliest memories are of the smell of old guitars and of listening to guys sitting around the store playing. When he was 11, he received his first guitar. At 13 he became fascinated with the banjo after seeing Flatt & Scruggs on television. The following year, his dad gave him a banjo for Christmas.
As he listened to the Stanley Brothers and Larry Sparks, Block became more interested in playing guitar and singing. Other musical influences include Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton, James Taylor and Benny Goodman. Alison Krauss & Union Station have recorded several of Block's songs, including "There Is a Reason" and "Pain of a Troubled Life," both of which appear on their So Long, So Wrong album. Rounder released Block's solo album, Faraway Land, in 2001.
Jerry Douglas started his musical career early. As a 5-year-old, he began playing the mandolin. He then moved to guitar and at 11 segued into Dobro after seeing Flatt & Scruggs Dobro master Uncle Josh Graves perform. At 18, Douglas hit the bluegrass festival circuit full time as a member of the Country Gentlemen. Before long, he joined Ricky Skaggs in J.D. Crowe's band, New South. In September 1975, the two young pickers broke away and formed their own group, Boone Creek. After three years, Skaggs embarked on his successful solo career, and Douglas started making his distinctive mark on all things Dobro.
In 1983, Douglas joined the Whites and played with them for two years. During this time, he became one of the first artists signed to the MCA Master Series label, for which he recorded three solo albums. Douglas began recording for Sugar Hill in 1992 but moved to Koch Records in the mid-2000s. He has won 12 Grammy awards.

North Sea Jazz 2009 Live - Joe Bonamassa - So many roads (HD)
North Sea Jazz 2009 Live - Joe Bonamassa - Further on up the road (HD)
Joe Bonamassa
Early life
Bonamassa was born in Utica, New York. He received his first guitar from his father at the age of 4, and by age 7 he was playing Stevie Ray Vaughan tunes note for note. At the age of 11, during a short period of being mentored by Danny Gatton, he learned such styles as country and jazz as well as heavy rock. During this time with Gatton, Bonamassa sat in with Gatton's band whenever they played in New York. He first opened for B. B. King at 12 years of age. After first hearing him play, King said, “This kid's potential is unbelievable. He hasn't even begun to scratch the surface. He's one of a kind.” At 14, he was invited to attend a Fender guitar event; during that trip to the West Coast he met Berry Oakley, Jr. Bonamassa and Berry founded the group Bloodline with Miles Davis's son Erin and Robby Krieger's son Waylon. They released one album which produced two chart singles — "Stone Cold Hearted", and "Dixie Peach." He has since played with other music greats including Buddy Guy, Foreigner, Robert Cray, Stephen Stills, Joe Cocker, Gregg Allman, Steve Winwood, Paul Jones, Eric Clapton, and Derek Trucks.
[edit]
Influences
Unlike other successful blues-rock guitarists, Bonamassa has cited his influences as being British and Irish blues acts, rather than American acts. In an interview in Guitarist magazine (issue 265), he cited the three albums that had the biggest influence on his playing: John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton (the Beano album), Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour and Goodbye by Cream. He also stated that Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood was a big influence at a young age.
He elaborated further on his influences in his interview:
"You know, my heroes were the English guys – Paul Kossoff, Peter Green, Eric Clapton. There’s so many - there’s Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher – another Irishman who played the same things, but don’t tell him that. But those guys were my guys – Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page. There’s a certain sophistication to their approach to the blues that I really like, more so than the American blues that I was listening to. B. B. King’s a big influence – he’s probably my biggest traditional influence. I love Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and T-Bone Walker and stuff like that, but I couldn’t sit down… I was always forcing myself to listen to whole records by them, where I’d rather listen to Humble Pie do "I'm Ready" than Muddy Waters, you know? I think, the English interpretation of the blues just hit me a lot better, you know?"
And in his October 2008 interview with Express & Star:
“When I heard Kossoff playing "Mr. Big" and when I heard Clapton playing "Crossroads" and when I heard Rory Gallagher playing "Cradle Rock", I was like, 'This is way cooler'.... "British blues are my thing. When I heard Rod Stewart and the Jeff Beck Group singing "Let Me Love You", it changed my life. I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Those are my influences".
These influences are evident in his music, but Bonamassa has been influenced by other artists; notable examples include B.B. King, Robert Johnson, Danny Gatton, Eric Johnson, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy. Bonamassa's style of playing incorporates the wide range of genres these influences cover: rock, blues-rock, Delta blues, electric blues, jazz, country - and even prog rock as evidenced by Yes's "Heart of the Sunrise" and "Starship Trooper"/"Wurm" section being regular features of live performances.
[edit]
Solo career
Bonamassa's first solo album, A New Day Yesterday, was released in 2000 and produced by Tom Dowd. Bonamassa added drummer Kenny Kramme and bassist Eric Czar as bandmates to tour and support the album.
After touring to support his first album, Bonamassa and the band returned to the studio in 2002 and worked with producer Clif Magness to release his second album So, It's Like That. The second album contained more traditional rock music than his previous studio album, attaining number one on the Billboard Blues Chart.
Positive fan feedback resulted in the 2003 release of Blues Deluxe, which was released to support the Year of the Blues. The album features nine covers of classic blues tunes along with three songs written by Bonamassa. This album also reached number one on the Billboard Blues Chart.
2005 saw the release of Had to Cry Today, which returned to the more traditional rock music sound heard in So, it's Like That. In late 2005, after extensive touring with his previous trio, Bonamassa changed the line-up of the musicians in his touring band. He enlisted the help of bassist Mark Epstein and former Kenny Wayne Shepherd drummer, Bogie Bowles.
Bonamassa performing at the Stafford Center, Stafford, Texas, in 2007
In 2006, Bonamassa released his fifth full-length studio album, You & Me. This album also appeared at #1 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart. For the recording of this album, he enlisted the talents of multiple studio musicians such as Jason Bonham, son of John Bonham. "Your Funeral And My Trial", a track on the album, featured harmonica prodigy L.D. Miller, and bassist Carmine Rojas (Rod Stewart, David Bowie). You & Me is Bonamassa's heaviest blues album, breaking away from the heavier rock styles featured in So, It's Like That, and Had to Cry Today. The title of the album was taken from the Django Reinhardt song "Vous et Moi" (You and Me -1942). The violin intro of that song was actually played by Reinhardt and inspired Bonamassa to write "Django", the 7th track on the album. Longer live versions would later appear on Live From Nowhere in Particular in 2009, and at the May 4th Royal Albert Hall Concert (Live DVD).
Sloe Gin was released in August 2007, and, as of March 2008, had spent more than 10 weeks at the top of the Billboard Blues Chart. This album features much more acoustic guitar work than any of Bonamassa's previous albums. Bonamassa's touring band underwent another change for this album's tour; bassist Carmine Rojas replaced Epstein and keyboardist Rick Melick was added. Both of the new band members took part in the recordings of You & Me and Sloe Gin.
Bonamassa presented his first live show as DJ on UK radio station Planet Rock on Sunday November 9, 2008, playing tracks from the likes of B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Rory Gallagher and Eric Clapton.
In November 2008 Bonamassa announced he would be playing at the Royal Albert Hall in London on May 4, 2009. Tickets for the concert sold out in less than a week. Bonamassa described the event to the Express & Star as "the complete culmination of 20 years of work for me."
At the Royal Albert Hall gig 4 May 2009, Joe Bonamassa stated that the first song that he learned to play was "Further on up the Road" and he then introduced Eric Clapton and together they performed the song, which Joe had been featuring on his current tour. Later in the gig, Joe paid tribute to the 'Paul Jones Radio Hour' on BBC Radio for playing his material on the air, then introduced Paul Jones (ex Manfred Mann & Blues Band) who played blues harp/harmonica on a Sonny Boy Williamson song called "Your Funeral, My Trial." Joe thanked the audience for "being a part of the best day of his life."
It was announced by UK radio station, Planet Rock, on Thursday 14th January 2010, that Joe Bonamassa was forming a new band with Jason Bonham and Glenn Hughes, to be known as Black Country. An album is planned for release later in the year.

She grow up on the side of the road
Where the church bells ring and strong love grows
She grew up good, she grew up slow
Like American honey
Steady as a preacher, free as a weed
Couldn't wait to get going
But wasn't quite ready to leave
So innocent pure and sweet
American Honey
There's a wild wild whisper blown in the wind
Callin out my name like a long lost friend
Oh I miss those days as the years go by
Oh nothings sweeter than summertime
And American honey
Get caught in the race of this crazy life
Tryin to be everything can make you lose your mind
I just wanna go back in time
To American honey yeah!
There s a wild wild whisper blown in the wind
Callin out my name like a long lost friend
Oh I miss those days as the years go by
Ooh nothings sweeter than summertime
And American Honey
Gone for so long now
I gotta get back to her some how
To American Honey
yeaaah
Ooooh
There's a wild wild whisper blown in the wind
Callin out my name like a long lost friend
Oh I miss those days as the years go by
Ooh nothings sweeter than summertime

Yeah, she's the one
The one I told you all about
Yeah, it was serious, but it was long ago
She just might walk over here
And give me a kiss for old times
But don't you worry dear
Old times, next to you, can never come close
I'll take today over yesterday, anyday
I'll take lyin' in your arms tonight
Over and above any love, I've known
Memories may find me, but they'll always be behind me
I'll take today over yesterday, anyday
I'd be lyin' if I tried to tell you now
That I never loved her
And she doesn't ever cross my mind
But that was yesterday, and baby, I don't wanna go back
Here is where I'm gonna stay
With you in each tomorrow of my life
I'll take today over yesterday, anyday
I'll take lyin' in your arms tonight
Over and above any love, I've known
Memories may find me, but they'll always be behind me
I'll take today over yesterday, anyday
Memories may find me, but they'll always be behind me
I'll take today over yesterday, anyday

That ol' sun comes up every mornin'
And goes back down at the end of every day
It's just that way
Stars show up every evenin'
Man in the moon comes up to play
It's just that way
And girl, lovin' you is something I was born to do
It's just that way
The ocean wet the desert dry
Don't ask me why, 'cause I can't say
It's just that way
As sure as the world keeps turnin'
My love for you will never change
Oh, it's just that way
And girl, lovin' you is something I was born to do

Funny country pills.
From the movie; "O' Brother Where Art Thou?" That's George Clooney appearing on lead vocals, with Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro accompanying, but the voices belong to Dan Tyminski and Union Station. Notice the cameo by Stephen Root as the blind Radio Station manager, he was also the voice of Chode in "Tripping the Rift" and played Jimmy James in "News Radio" and Milton Waddums in "Office Space."
Lady Antebellum " Need You Now"
Lady Antebellum is comprised of singers Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley and multi-instrumentalist Dave Haywood. Kelley and Haywood were classmates at the University of Georgia, studying finance, when they started writing songs together. In time, they decided to move to Nashville to pursue music careers. Hillary Scott, the daughter of country singer Linda Davis and musician Lang Scott, once had major label interest as a solo artist; however, the deal fell through. In 2006, she introduced herself to Kelley (whose brother, Josh Kelley, is also a musician) after recognizing him from his MySpace profile. When all three members started writing and performing together, Nashville noticed. They began opening shows for big country artists, as well as earning high-profile gigs in the clubs around town. With a successful first single ("Love Don't Live Here"), Capitol Nashville released their debut album in 2008.
Lady Antebellum wrapped up 2009 with a five-week No. 1 hit, "Need You Now," an emotionally vulnerable ballad about on-again/off-again relationships. But before the single ever shipped to country radio, the ensemble wasn't sure if it was actually the right choice to introduce a new album.
They thought the first single should be an up-tempo song, but executives at their label, Capitol Nashville, were convinced that "Need You Now" was the perfect choice.
"Everyone heard that song and just flipped out," says Charles Kelley, who co-founded the band with childhood friend Dave Haywood and Nashville native Hillary Scott. "We were thinking from a live show perspective because we were like, 'Well, we had "Run to You," which is kind of a mid-tempo, so we need something fun!' They said, 'Guys, I'm telling you, this is the one.' We put our trust in them and, sure enough, they were right."
With their second album, Need You Now, set for release on Tuesday (Jan. 26), the energetic trio visited with CMT Insider's Allison DeMarcus about living up to high expectations, building their fan base gradually and writing hits in the middle of the night.
DeMarcus: "Need You Now" was a No. 1 hit for five weeks, and that's how you guys are kicking off this new album. How excited are you about that?
Kelley: It's huge, honestly. We keep saying it was very unexpected and just a huge confirmation that this record is hopefully going to be a kind of life-changer for us. Doing the second album is a lot of pressure, and having the first single do so well hopefully takes a little bit of the pressure off. But on the flipside, it's a double-edged sword because now the rest of the record has to live up to the first single. (laughs)

Country Stars and More Offer Hope for Haiti Now
So many celebrities and regular folks alike have offered what support they can to the people of Haiti tonight (Jan. 22). The Hope for Haiti Now telethon has absolutely been a moving example of people, no matter their walk of life, coming together with a common goal. The wealth of music alone was evidence of that. From Bruce Springsteen's "We Shall Overcome" to Mary J. Blige's beautiful rendition of "Hard Times," there were no genre boundaries on this night. Of course, country music was well represented by Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, Dave Matthews, Neil Young and even Hank Williams.
Swift offered a cover version of "Breathless," originally performed by Better Than Ezra, and her choice of song would prove to be more than appropriate. With the theme of finding a safe haven in the form of love, the lyrics included lines like "When you feel the world is crashing/All around your feet/Come running headlong into my arms/Breathless."
Later, during a group performance featuring Urban, Crow and Kid Rock, the trio echoed that sentiment with an acoustic rendition of the classic "Lean on Me." Trading heartfelt verses, they sang with passion, "Lean on me when you're not strong/And I'll be your friend/I'll help you carry on." Matthews and Young opted for an even more stripped down arrangement for their pleading duet of Williams' "Alone and Foresaken."
There were many other touching moments as well, especially Justin Timberlake's "Hallelujah" and Jennifer Hudson's version of "Let It Be," but perhaps none more so than Haitian artist Emeline Michel's optimism as she sang "Many Rivers to Cross." It reminds us that this event was really about the little things we can all do -- little things that keep optimism and hope alive. You can continue the effort to help heal Haiti by purchasing the Hope for Haiti Now full performance album or the full two-hour video telecast on iTunes
